How Does A Heat Exchanger Work?

If you have a wood stove, you have a large amount of control over the amount of heat that is channeled into your home. By burning the right fuel, correctly positioning the damper, and by doing other things, you can maximize the heat output of your wood stove throughout the cold winter months. You also have the option of using your wood stove to heat water. A wood furnace heat exchanger is designed to transfer heat from one medium to another.

Basic Setup

A wood furnace heat exchanger can be set up in a number of different ways. In its most basic form, a heat exchanger should have a set of coils that run through a larger tube. A hot fluid or gas is pumped through the coils, while a cold fluid runs through the tube. The heat that runs through the coils transfers to the surrounding fluid in the tube. In this way, heat is transferred from one medium to another in a way that is simple and efficient.

Types of Heat Exchangers

Heat exchangers can be part of systems in homes, businesses, factories, and in appliances and machines all over the world. Although there are many different types of heat exchangers, one of the most common varieties is called the shell and tube exchanger. This is the type of conductor that has already been described. Another common type of heat exchanger is a plate/fin setup, which uses a series of thin plates for the passage of fluid.

The best type of heat exchanger can vary depending on its application and the space that is available.

How Are They Used?

There are many different uses for heat exchangers. A wood furnace heat exchanger can be used to heat water, for example. The hot gasses from the fire can flow through a coil system; heating water that will either be used for a radiant heating system or that will be used for washing, showering, and other hot water applications. By using a heat exchanger, hot air can also be channeled into the home without spewing out ash and other byproducts of combustion. In factories, the heat that is created and released in the exhaust can be channeled into a heat exchanger and reused to heat the building, rather than simply being lost. Similarly, a heat exchanger can use heat created in a car or truck engine to heat the interior of the vehicle. Because the exhaust is kept separate from the air that is heated, fumes are not released into the car.

Using a wood furnace heat exchanger is an efficient, affordable, and effective way to use heat that is released through the combustion process.
